Text Box: Neuse River Trips

This page contains specific info for at least one paddling option for this body of water.  To learn more about other portions of this river refer to “Paddling Eastern NC” by Paul Ferguson,  “Adventure Guide to the Triangle” by Maia Dery, or call Frog Hollow.

High water and bad weather can make paddling anywhere dangerous.  Before beginning a trip, paddlers should always use their own judgment to decide if their personal paddling skills match potential paddling conditions they may encounter.

Milburnie Dam to Poole Rd

Minimum Water Level Required To Paddle: 1.5 ft, paddleable year round except after prolonged drought (Click the NEUSE USGS link in the water droplet at the bottom of this page to check current water levels).

Type of Trip: Point A-to-Point B moving water paddle

Length of Trip: 1 to 2 hours depending upon water levels and paddling speed.  Stopping for lunch will lengthen the time for this trip.

Put In: Milburnie Dam Access just off of Highway 64 east of Raleigh

Take Out: Poole Road access, just east of Raleigh.  River right, upstream side of bridge.

Description: This is a short but nice stretch of the Neuse River.  Good scenery and abundant wildlife make it hard to believe that this stretch of the Neuse is literally right next to Raleigh.  It is possible to paddle a short distance up Crabtree Creek and soon after passing Crabtree Creek are some nice rock islands and a potential Class II rapid that make a very nice lunch stop.

Possible Challenges: Class I and one Class II rapid at higher water levels

Poole Rd to NC 42

Minimum Water Level Required To Paddle: 1.25 ft, paddleable year round except after prolonged drought (Click the NEUSE USGS link in the water droplet at the bottom of this page to check current water levels).

Type of Trip: Point A-to-Point B style paddle

Length of Trip: 5 to 7 hours depending upon water levels and paddling speed.  Stopping for lunch will lengthen the time for this trip.

Put In: Poole Road access just east of Raleigh.  River-right, upstream side of bridge.

Take Out: NC 42 bridge crossing in Clayton

Description: This is a mostly flat water section interspersed with numerous little Class I-ish riffles and a couple of more significant Class I ledges.  Usually abundant wildlife and good scenery.  This trip does pass by a Raleigh Waste Water treatment discharge point.  Because of the ongoing efforts of the Neuse River Foundation and the Neuse River Keepers, Raleigh’s wastewater treatment process is much better than it was a handful of years ago.  Despite the discharge point, this is a very nice section of river.

Possible Challenges: Length of Trip, Exposure, and Class I Ledges
