Canoe and Kayak Camping

High water and bad weather can make paddling anywhere dangerous.  Paddlers should always use their own judgment to decide if their personal paddling skills match potential paddling conditions they may find themselves in. 

 

Jordan Lake

Minimum Water Level Required to Paddle: always above minimum

 

Type of Trip: Point A-to-Point B or Out-and-Back flat water lake paddle

 

Length of Trip: Variable

 

Put In/Take Out: Numerous options from both State Recreation and Wildlife Resources Commission Access Points

 

Campsite: Camping is allowed within the numerous State Recreation Area Campgrounds are scattered along the length of the lake. 

 

Description: Overnight trips on Jordan Lake can be set up numerous ways with varying degrees of difficulty depending upon mileage and # of nights out.  Even car camping near the water and just taking out a canoe or kayak to explore the lake from your site can be extremely fun, not to mention logistically simple.  Any trip planning will require a good map of the lake. Kingfisher Maps makes a very nice map that is available from Frog Hollow.

 

Possible Trip Option: A nice one or two night trip could be accomplished by paddling from the Roberson Creek Access at the mouth of the Haw River, Camping at the New Hope Overlook Campground, and then either paddling back to the Roberson Access or picking one of a number of other takeout locations further north on the lake. 

 

Possible Challenges: Wind, Exposure, Length of trip, Motor Boats.

Falls Lake

Minimum Water Level Required to Paddle: always above minimum

 

Type of Trip: Point A-to-Point B or Out-and-Back flat water lake paddle

Cape Fear River - Buckhorn to Lillington

Minimum Water Level Required to Paddle: 1.3 feet, usually above minimum.

Type of Trip: Point A-to-Point B white water paddle

 

Length of Trip: 16 miles

 

Put In: Wildlife Resources Boat Ramp just downstream from the town of Lillington

 

Take Out: NC 217 bridge crossing near Erwin

 

Campsite: Raven Rock State Park

 

Description: The Cape Fear is a wide scenic river, for a Piedmont river it usually has a good flow year round.  About half way down this section is Raven Rock State Park.  First-Come-First-Served Canoe in Campsites are available here. 

 

Possible Challenges: Class I-II+ White Water, length of trip, take out is up a very steep hill

All paddlers on non-guided trips at this location must have previous moving water

canoeing or kayaking experience

Overnight Locations Within a Few Hours of the Triangle Region

Here are just a handful of the many great overnight locations within relatively short drive of the Triangle Region.  All the locations listed below have designated camping areas that require payment and/or registration.  Frog Hollow can help make a trip to one of these great spots possible, either through a basic rental, a delivery & shuttle, or even a guided trip, to learn more send us an email or give us a call.

 

· Roanoke River Basin - Over a dozen camping platforms scattered through out the black water swamps of the Roanoke Basin.  Frog Hollow can set up your trip here or you can arrange your own trip with a basic rental and make platform reservations through the Roanoke River Partners website.  Located in Eastern NC near Williamston, 2.5 to 3 hours from the Triangle Region.

· Merchants Millpond - Small but extremely beautiful Cypress/Tupelo covered millpond.  Click Here for more info about this beautiful destination.  Located in Eastern NC, 3.5 hours from the Triangle Region 

· Little Pee Dee River - This new overnight option offered by Frog Hollow.  Currently can only be run as a guided trip.  For more info Click Here.  Located in SC approx 3 hours from the Triangle Region.

· Bear Island - Beautiful undeveloped Barrier Island that is part of Hammock’s Beach State Park.  For more info Click Here.
