This page contains specific info for at least one paddling option for this body of water. To learn more about other portions of this river refer to "Paddling Eastern NC" by Paul Ferguson, "Adventure Guide to the Triangle" by Maia Dery, or call Frog Hollow.
High water and bad weather can make paddling anywhere dangerous. Before beginning a trip, paddlers should always use their own judgment to decide if their personal paddling skills match potential paddling conditions they may encounter.
Deep River Park to 15-501 Minimum Water Level Required To Paddle: 1.5 ft, paddleable year round except after prolonged drought
Type of Trip: Point A-to-Point B moving water paddle
Length of Trip: 1.5 to 3 hours depending upon water levels and paddling speed. Stopping for lunch can lengthen the time for this trip. (Click the DEEP USGS link in the water droplet at the bottom of this page to check current water levels).
Put In: Deep River Park at the corner of Deep River Rd and Cumnock Rd
Take Out: 15-501 Bridge - vehicle pull off river right on upstream side of road, paddler takeout river right on downstream side of bridge.
Description: The Deep is generally a wide slow flowing river. This section is mostly forested and has an interesting history of coal mining and iron production. The massive remains of the Endor Iron Furnace are a impressive sign of this history for those willing to search it out. While it is very close to the river it is not easy to spot from the water except in winter. It also makes a great lunch stop, the best way to access it is take out just past the only rapid on river right, this is the only easy way to get up the embankment from the river. From here you will need to walk through some relatively thick vegetation, following the river downstream for about a quarter mile. You will eventually run into the furnace (there is no real trail to follow so the walk can sometimes be quite challenging, especially mid summer).
