High water and bad weather can make paddling anywhere dangerous. Before beginning a trip, paddlers should always use their own judgment to decide if their personal paddling skills match potential paddling conditions they may encounter.
Bynum Reservoir
Minimum Water Level Required to Paddle: Always above minimum, however, high water could make upstream paddling difficult.
Type of Trip: Out-and-back flat water paddle
Length of Trip: 1 to 3 hours - lots of interesting lunch stop possibilities
Put In/Take Out: 15-501 bridge crossing over Haw River, upstream of the Bynum Dam
Description: Nice flat water trip with a number of islands making loop or figure 8 style trips possible. It is possible to portage over rocks. and run Final Solution, the last rapid coming down stream on the Haw before entering the Bynum Reservoir.
Possible Challenges: Be very careful of the dam!, wind, at times of high water there can be a flow through this section

Chicken Bridge to 15-501
Minimum Water Level Required To Paddle: 3.75 ft (Click the HAW USGS link in the water droplet at the bottom of this page to check current water levels).
Type of Trip: Point A-to-Point B white water paddle
Length of Trip: 3 to 6 hours depending upon water levels and paddling speed. Stopping for lunch can lengthen the time for this trip.
Put In: Chicken Bridge Rd - river left, downstream side of road (Pvt. Land, be considerate)
Take Out: 15-501 Access on river left before spillway of Bynum Dam
Description: Varied "terrain." The Haw is wide and has numerous islands along it's entire length. The river banks are mostly forested and wildlife can be quite abundant along this stretch. Some of the islands in the middle of this length of river can be tricky to navigate. Be sure to consult a guide book or map, or be with a paddler familiar with the river.
Possible Challenges: Class I-II+ rapids, navigating through islands, length of trip
